Lesson 1

SQL Server Components

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 was a previous version of Microsoft's Enterprise database. It has been completely redesigned from its former version SQL Server 2012. It is full featured and packed with wizards that make it easier than ever to administer.

Learning objectives

This module provides an overview of Microsoft SQL Server 2016. After completing it, you will be able to:
  1. Define a relational database
  2. Identify and describe SQL Server 2000 services
  3. Describe SQL Server 2012 architecture
  4. Plan an effective SQL Server 2012 installation strategy
  5. Use the Enterprise Manager to administer SQL servers
  6. Use the Query Analyzer to execute queries and view their results
  7. Describe some of the most useful wizards available in Microsoft SQL Server 2012
In the next lesson, you will learn about the concepts underlying relational databases.

SQL Server 2022

The latest version of Microsoft SQL Server is SQL Server 2022. It was released on November 16, 2022. It is a scalable, hybrid data platform that is now Azure-enabled. It offers a wide range of new features and capabilities, including:
  1. Performance and scalability: SQL Server 2022 delivers up to 10x better performance for OLTP workloads and up to 8x better performance for data warehousing workloads. It also supports up to 16TB of memory per instance and up to 64 cores per instance.
  2. Security: SQL Server 2022 includes a number of new security features, such as: A new security model that provides fine-grained control over access to data A new data encryption feature that encrypts data at rest and in transit A new auditing feature that tracks all changes to data
  3. Availability: SQL Server 2022 includes a number of new availability features, such as: A new AlwaysON disaster recovery solution that provides continuous availability for mission-critical applications A new high availability solution that provides high availability for non-mission-critical applications
  4. Hybrid capabilities: SQL Server 2022 is the first version of SQL Server that is fully integrated with Azure. This means that you can easily move data between on-premises and Azure, and you can run SQL Server workloads in the cloud or on-premises.
If you are looking for a new version of Microsoft SQL Server, I recommend that you consider SQL Server 2022. It offers a wide range of new features and capabilities that can help you improve the performance, security, and availability of your data.
SQL Server 2016 is the latest addition to Microsoft's data platform, with a variety of new features and enhancements that deliver breakthrough performance, advanced security, and richer, integrated reporting and analytics capabilities. Built using the new rapid-release model, SQL Server 2016 incorporates many features introduced first in the cloud in Microsoft Azure SQL Database. Furthermore, SQL Server 2016 includes the capability to dynamically migrate historical data to the cloud. Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2016 leads you through the major changes in the data platform, whether you are using SQL Server technology on-premises or in the cloud, but it does not cover every new feature added to the platform. Instead, we explain key concepts and provide examples for the more significant features so that you can start experiencing their benefits firsthand.
